Happy Feasting!

Technically, I’m on vacation this week, though nobody has noticed so far, since I haven’t actually pried my fingers off the keyboard long enough.

Mindful of the fact that I am theoretically not working, I did take some time off yesterday to go to our local SPCA’s biannual fundraiser book sale and returned with whole paper grocery bags full of books. While I was putting the finishing touches on the cover of the March release and uploading it to the printer, the SO got started reading and is currently on chapter 14 of the first book. Methinks we didn’t buy enough to last us until the May sale.

In the meantime, I’ve caught up on orders and e-mail and everything else that needed to be done this morning, and I will step away from the computer now until some time this evening. I’m even wearing my determined face.

My somewhat longer-term plans include to vacation further by holding a basting spoon in one hand and a manuscript I’m currently reading in the other come turkey day–though in this house that day actually involves roast lamb and other Greek delicacies, since the designated cooks (the SO and myself) broadly fall into the categories of Cretan and raised in Athens.

Most importantly though, our next major manuscript review session will be over the Christmas break, which means that if you’ve been thinking of querying us, now would be a good time to get started on that process. We’re reading mostly for spring 2009 at this point, with one slot left for fall 2008, and I have approximately 48 hours of flight time lined up between December 21st and January 6th, so I should be able to get through a fair number of manuscripts.

Random conversations with various authors

One of the side effects of having an author writing in a fairly scary-but-almost-real universe like Manna Francis’ Administration is that, occasionally, I have edits like this:

Really, really important question: are you terribly attached to that [unusual in the English-speaking world] name for the torture victim? Only, I think my sister might get all paranoid and think I deliberately had the character named after her…

I’m glad to report that after Manna had stopped laughing hysterically, she was only too happy to change the name, so my sister will still talk to me come Christmas (maybe).

I also had some longer exchanges recently with a writer who was preparing to give a work shop on small presses, and who asked me to give him some feedback on the pros and cons of running one. I almost replied, “Dear Santa, for Christmas, I would like everyone who queries us to have read at least one of our books.” Manic D Press actually has it as part of their submission guidelines for reasons similar to mine, and as with them it isn’t necessarily a question of sales (though we’d be turning a profit this year if it happened). Rather, it’s a question of getting submissions that are appropriate to our editorial vision and up to the writing standard we expect. (Conversely, as an author, I would never, ever want to sign a novel to a publisher whose work I hadn’t seen and studied in some detail to make sure they could turn out a professional-looking product.)

A little anecdote concerning the question of appropriateness: I’ll never forget that practically the first submission we got after Mouth of the Lion was published with the, I thought quite obviously, deeply ironic tag line “Family Values for the 21st Century,” was a submission for “a Republican chick lit novel that would also appeal to a Conservative male readership.” Now, anybody who’s read Mouth of the Lion could probably tell that this would not be a good fit, not in a million years… I grant you it’s hard to judge a publisher by just that one novel, but now that we’re up to five novels, with three more coming out next spring, it should be getting a lot easier to get a general idea of where we sit on every fence.

Special Promotion

Wow! Our entire first print run of Mind Fuck is very close to selling out. As of today, I have two copies left that aren’t taken. We have more books on the way, but they’ll take about a week or so to get here. In the meantime, I just received the brand-new never-before-seen novella that will start Book 2 of the Administration series if we go ahead and publish the rest of the stories. Guess who’s going to have a lot of fun proofreading tonight?

On to another subject entirely: It’s come to my attention (by virtue of unadvisedly entering a supermarket), that Giftmas is almost upon us. I also happen to think that books make a great gift for anyone–especially that distant cousin, aunt, or uncle, that leaves you drawing a complete blank when trying to come up with more creative gift ideas. And because of that we will run the following special gift-giving promotion while stocks last or through November 30th, whichever comes first:

Mind Fuck by Manna Francis Releases

Well, the big day is finally upon us, and Manna Francis’ Mind Fuck, which I’ve wanted to see in print ever since I first read it almost seven years ago, is now available from our website (and should become available from the usual online retailers within he next few days).

It’s a great dystopian murder mystery with sci-fi overtones and should appeal to anyone who likes the genre. My Dad, who introduced me to Heinlein, Sturgeon, and Bester at an early age and is responsible for my lifelong love of science fiction, just called to say he’d finished reading his advance copy and that he was enthralled and loved the book, and that it should be a bestseller. (And he didn’t complain about or comment on the presence of gay sex, much to my relief… Of course, now that he’s reading this, he’s probably going to call back just to see me squirm…)

Rather than reproducing the book blurb here, I want to share what Chris Owen has to say about this one:

Manna Francis’ Mind Fuck begins to tell the story of a dystopian world, full of charming sociopaths and shiny tech. With characters that are deeply flawed, living in a system that is both terrifying and oddly compelling, the first book in the Administration series absolutely captivates the reader’s attention.

Toreth investigates murders on behalf of the Administration, using sanctioned torture to get the answers he needs. Figuring out Warrick is harder than finding motives for murder, however, and a great deal more intriguing. The two men are worlds apart, in almost every way, yet they are irresistibly drawn together.

With wonderful storytelling, fascinating characters, and a world that’s frighteningly like what ours could be, Mind Fuck is a clear winner.

~ Chris Owen

A while ago, a prospective author got upset because while he got a reply from us within the time specified on our website, it wasn’t a yes or no, but some questions/clarifications for the query. As a result, we upped our response time a little and specified that “response” doesn’t necessarily mean yes or no.

However, I do have something to share that will put that into perspective: I just received a response for a query I sent out more than two years ago! So really, a 1-2 week turnaround is probably pretty damn good for this business.

Fun for writers

Or at least I’ve had countless hours of fun with the Gender Genie, which invariably guesses my gender wrong. Try it out on some of your stories!

Promo Monday

William Walsh has another short piece up at Pequin.

Also, for those in the Philadelphia area, this is a reminder that Paul Elwork is doing a reading/signing at the Glen Foerd estate Tuesday evening. The venue inspired the setting for his novel The Tea House. There are a whole bunch of neat things happening in conjunction with the reading, such as tours of the estate and Tarot readings, so check out Paul’s website for details!

Public Service Announcement

Today is National Coming Out Day and the twentieth anniversary of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights and the first public display of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt.

We here at Casperian Books are quite proud that four out of our five current titles feature LGBT characters in one form or another.

News from Casperian Books

We’ve been incredibly busy and are ramping up to two fall releases and at least three (and possibly four) spring releases.

The first of our fall releases, The Tea House by Paul Elwork, is available starting today. Here’s the cover and the book blurb:

Do You Want to Know a Secret?

Emily Stewart has a secret. So does her brother, Michael.

Thirteen years old, precocious and privileged, the Stewart twins are just beginning to learn the power of secrets. But what starts as a game among their small circle of friends soon grows out of control; Emily and Michael’s secret spills into the adult world, where secrets can be deadly.

The Tea House is a richly evocative tale of coming of age in early 20th century America. With period detail and deep compassion, Paul Elwork delivers a suspenseful novel that delves into the intricate truths lying at the very heart of families.

You can read the first chapter here.

Author Paul Elwork will be doing several appearances in the Philadelphia/New Jersey area over the next few weeks in support of The Tea House. The list of events can be found at his website here.

Our second fall release, Mind Fuck by Manna Francis, will be available starting October 29th. Swag is already available in our Cafepress shop.

In other exciting news:

We’ve simplified and streamlined the shopping cart on our website to make buying books easier! Shipping charges are now automatically calculated based on your shipping address.

We’ve got a blog! I had to quickly learn some php to wrangle it into submission, but I think it’s looking pretty nifty now. Expect random updates on all things Casperian Books to be posted here in future and feel free to syndicate to your heart’s content.
