Fall 2010 List

Our fall 2010 releases kick off today with Daniel Boyd’s ‘Nada, an action/adventure romp through Depression-era Mexico.

On November 1st, we’ll be following that up with the Lambs of Men by Charles Dodd White, in which a man returns from World War I to become a Marine Corps recruiter in his Appalachian hometown.

Lastly, on December 1st, we’ll be releasing Imperfect Solitude by Tom Mahony, a cross between a coming-of-age story and an eco-thriller set in Northern California.

For those of you anxiously awaiting the next installment in the Administration series, fear not, it will be appearing but has been delayed slightly due to events in the author’s family. In fact, I don’t want to jinx it, but it looks like there will be a Book 8 as well (I have read the first 100 pages or so and it’s a pot boiler!).

We hope you enjoy these great fall releases!

Who hasn’t dreamed of an unexpected inheritance from a long-lost relative?

Alonso Santina leads a comfortable life in the suburbs of New Jersey with a budding construction business, a new house, and a wife with a baby on the way. When he receives a letter from an attorney in Spain informing him of the death of a long-lost relative, little does he know that what begins as a simple trip to Cádiz with his cousin Sal to claim his inheritance will turn into an adventure spanning two continents, pursued by lawyers and thieves, all spurred on by the discovery of a five-hundred-year-old journal.

Casperian Books is pleased to announce the release of John Russo’s new novel, The Legacy. Click here to read the first chapter.

First Against The Wall by Manna Francis

Who is leading the rabble to victory?

Toreth shifted against the wall, trying to get comfortable. Between bruises and handcuffs, he didn’t have much success.

On the first day, in the first cell, the lights had been on, the water dispenser working, and the prisoner feeding schedule still running. Then the lights went out, and things had gone steadily downhill from there. Now, he sat in darkness so absolute that he couldn’t see a hand in front of his face, if he’d been in a position to check.

The last time he’d been taken out of the cell it had been light in the corridors, which was something. If the power to the building failed totally, they would suffocate down here. At the moment, the air cycling was still functional, feeding chill air into the cell–like the lights, the heating systems had been switched off or had broken down. He couldn’t accurately estimate when he’d last eaten. Two days or so, probably, but he was starting to feel the effects. The water system worried him most. It worked only intermittently and the water had an unpleasant, overly chemical flavor.

The systems were failing. Something had gone badly wrong, and had continued to go wrong for so long that he’d been forced unwillingly to conclude that it had to have hit more than I&I.

Revolution has come to the Administration, as the citizens rise up against government and corporate oppression. With old and new enemies all around them, what will the new future hold for despised para-investigator Val Toreth, and corporate highflier Keir Warrick? And how long will that future last?

Casperian Books is pleased to announce the release of the sixth book in the Administration series, First Against the Wall. Click here to read an extract from the first chapter of First Against the Wall.

The Gravedigger by Ilan Herman

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust…

What happens to us after we die? Does the soul live on? Is there a soul at all, or are we just electrical impulses walking upright? Poets and dreamers, prophets and madmen have failed to answer these questions. Maybe the only person who knows the answer is he who ushers us to our final resting place.

Adam is the gravedigger, a shadowy figure with a mysterious past, a reclusive landscaper who has given up the gardens of the living to tend to the dead. He lives a quiet and orderly existence until tragic echoes of the past invade his sanctuary and ancient ghosts threaten his sanity. Do the dead live on? Can decades-old heartbreak be overcome? This eerie and thrilling debut novel by Ilan Herman will leave you guessing until the very end…and beyond.

We are pleased to announce that The Gravedigger is now available through the Casperian Books website and booksellers everywhere. The first chapter can be read online here.

Announcing our Spring 2010 List

Our spring releases kick off today with Curtis Smith’s Truth or Something Like It, a novel about a small-town schoolteacher thrust into the political limelight because of an accident.

On April 1st, we’ll be following that up with the The Gravedigger by Ilan Herman, a ghost story of sorts, in which the title character finds that caring for a cemetery is not nearly as peaceful as it sounds.

The sixth release in Manna Francis’ Administration series is next, scheduled for release on May 1st. This volume is the novel First Against the Wall, in which revolution comes to the near-future dystopia of the European Administration.

Lastly, on June 1st, we’ll be releasing The Legacy by John Russo, a fast-paced adventure spanning two continents, featuring lawyers, thieves, and a five-hundred-year-old journal.

In somewhat related news, Motor City Blues will be going out of print on March 15th. We have a few copies left here that will be available until then, so this is the last chance to get your copy!

We hope you enjoy these great spring releases!

A Great Start for the New Year!

Well, now that the holidays are over, it’s time to focus on books again. Technically, we didn’t stop working over the holidays, of course, but we were taking it just a little bit easy, right until January 1st, when everybody got to help in the 12-hour year-end-close marathon with extra hair-pulling caused by the fact that California, it being broke and all, decided to change its sales tax rate halfway through the year, so that a tax return that usually takes all of five minutes took about two hours because we had to pull data we wouldn’t ordinarily collect. Ah, the joys of small business ownership!

And with the new year, Hoosier Life & Casualty got a great writeup in Nuvo here, and the Preditors and Editors Readers’ Poll is taking place again, allowing you to cast your vote for your favorite Casperian Books title until January 14th. The index to the voting pages can be found here.
